This piece, ‘WARI’, is a coat rack inspired by ‘bamboo splitting’—a fundamental process in bamboo craftsmanship. It captures the unique tenacity of bamboo: its resilience, which makes it seem as though it might split yet remains intact; and its docile nature, splitting straight along the grain. Focusing on the essence of the material and the rationality of the techniques passed down through the generations, the design captures that fleeting moment in a tangible form. xBy splitting a single bamboo stalk, utilising its flexibility to curve it, and then rejoining the separated sections, the piece has been reconstructed into a sculptural piece of furniture that combines structure and function. The exterior retains the natural texture of the bamboo, whilst the interior is finished with lacquer, resulting in a piece that is both durable and contemporary. By intersecting traditional techniques with a contemporary perspective, the artist has carefully drawn out new possibilities for form whilst listening intently to the voice of the material. Through the act of ‘splitting’, this work has discovered a form not for destruction, but for connection.
